You can now request a first supply of the contraceptive pill directly from the pharmacy, without needing to see your GP or sexual health clinic first.

How the service works

  • You may self-refer, or be signposted by your GP practice or sexual health clinic.
  • Our pharmacist or pharmacy technician will offer a confidential consultation.
  • Together you will reach a shared decision on the supply of oral contraception or oral emergency contraception, ensuring it is clinically appropriate.
  • You do not need to be registered with a GP to access this service.
  • With your consent, we can inform your GP practice that you have used the service.
  • All supplies are free of charge — there are no prescription charges.

Who can use it?

The service is available for people seeking oral contraception or oral emergency contraception. You do not need to be registered with a GP, and the service is free of charge.

Supplied safely

All supplies are made by a pharmacist or pharmacy technician under a patient group direction (PGD), after demonstrating the specific skills and knowledge required to offer the service safely.
